GIG OF THE WEEK

Guy Buttery

Moyo Zoo Lake

(Thursday)

NO WORDS can explain just how amazing Guy Buttery is. When it comes to guitar playing, even the great Carlos Santana would stop and pay attention to his skills.

Buttery manages to move so quickly across the strings of his guitar that you would think an entire acoustic band was performing. His dexterity is beyond words and he comfortably changes the position of the capo midsong, with amazing results. He also makes use of the steel for his slide performances.

The two-time Sama nominee has six albums so there will be much to listen to on Thursday. You will experience an array of sounds which include deep grooves, some African- inspired synths and a mix of other genres all encapsulated into one.

The one thing most musicians can’t do that Buttery can is to play around with your emotions any way he chooses. He is like that sound you hear in a good movie which dictates when you should be happy or sad.

That takes skill. – Munyaradzi Vomo

• The show is at Moyo, Zoo Lake (1 Prince of Wales Drive, Joburg). Cost: R120. Tickets from Webtickets. Doors open at 6pm, show at 8pm.
