GIG OF THE WEEK

Simpiwe Dana

2nd Old Mutual Music in the Gardens Pretoria show (Sunday)

It may still be a little nippy, but that should not stop you from going out with the family to see the amazing Afro-souk and jazz songbird Simphiwe Dana at Pretoria National Botanical Gardens in the 2nd Old Mutual Music in the Gardens showcase.

Often likened to the great Miriam Makeba and Dorothy Manuka, Dana surprisingly performs at the Old Mutual Music in the Gardens for the first time.

Although much younger than the musicians that she’s often compared to, Dana steps up to their level with her brand of music.

After making hits like Ndiredi, Zundiqondisise, Naphakade and Sonini Nanini, among others, it was clear she was a living legend. Her ability to be make classics is unmatched and she manages to keep young people hooked.

In case you didn’t know, she is also the voice that you will hear on the theme song of the great Yizo Yizo television show. The multiple SAMA award-winning singer will be joined on stage by Sne Mdlalose the Eshowe singer and dancer. – Munya Vomo

• Tickets are available before the concert through www.plankton.mobi priced at R50 and then R100 on the day. Kids under 12 enter for free.
