GIG OF THE WEEK

Basha Uhuru Festival

Constitutional Hill, Johannesburg

(Friday from 6pm, Saturday from 9am and Sunday from 10am)

Although things seem to have quietened down with regards to the xenophobic violence, more needs to be done to educate people on the subject. Investigation needs to be done on what causes it and how to curb it.

These are some of the discussions that will be heard at the Basha Uhuru Festival this weekend which follows the Youth Dialogue on Xenophobia event that took place yesterday.

As a loveLife initiative, the project seeks to start a dialogue on a series of topics around how the youth are affected by xenophobia.

“Although the upsurge of condemnation that happened after the violent attacks was very welcome and good for our country, it is time to hear young people’s voices on the matter,” said loveLife CEO, Grace Matlhape.

“loveLife runs a youth leadership exchange programme with three other African countries at the moment: Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, and have established loveLife’s groundBREAKER programme in Tanzania and Zambia,” she added.

The festival, which begins today, will be held at Constitutional Hill (1 Kotze St, Joburg) and will address various human rights aspects between artists’ performances.

Some of the acts to look out for include Rasty Knaylez, who has some of the best graffitti artwork around Gauteng. He will be making new works related to the subject throughout the weekend.

Several musicians and poets will perform material related to the subject. It is, after all, the Youth Month, and there is no better time to talk about this. – Munya Vomo
