GIG OF THE WEEK

Open mic at TJ’s acoustic club

TJ’s Acoustic Club, Emmarentia (Thursday)

Nechama Brodie

Once upon a time, not so long ago, I used to be a master of karaoke. My hit track was UB40’s version of Fools Rush In. I was so good that one day I took my sister, who watched my performance and thought I was lip syncing. Of course, it isn’t something I’d say out loud to my cool friends, but at least I was good at something.

If this is your kind of thing, then you’d probably want to try your hand at TJ’s Acoustic Club’s (Mark’s Park, Judith Rd, Emmarentia) Thursday open mic nights. As the name suggests, the gig is an acoustic one so you probably need to be able to play a tune or two on a guitar.

The genre of music should preferably be folk along the lines of Madeleine Peyroux. But before you enter, perhaps you might want to swing by this Thursday, see what they do and rate it for yourself. This is not Idols SA or X Factor, so you will not be judged or booed off the stage. It is just a platform for those with a love of the arts.

Over the years we have seen the likes of Bob Dubery, Bob Bodacious and Nechama Brodie give interesting performances.

Should you be satisfied with the talent you currently have then you need to arrive earlier than 8pm to secure a spot on the line-up.

Who knows what an opportunity like this will bring, right?

That’s for performers, but if you just want to hear something else other than what you are used to, then this is your spot to unearth some talent.

The official gig starts at 8pm and it costs R25 to get in. Should you have any questions, call |079 729 0294 or visit their Facebook page: “TJ’s Music Club”. – Munya Vomo
