GIG OF THE WEEK
Miguel
Standard Bank Arena (Tonight)
I have someone close to me who hates it when I start singing the first line of Miguel’s Do You? The line goes: Do you like drugs? and the innocence and sincerity in the singer’s voice makes it feel as if it is a harmless question. But there is nothing innocent about Miguel’s music.
It is for the lovers who like to express themselves in clever ways loaded with hidden meanings.
While speaking to us last week the alternative R&B singer promised that his first tour to South Africa would be like nothing we have seen before.
That’s a very bold statement coming from someone who has just risen to critical acclaim.
But fresh from the recently held Grammys where he won one for Best R&B Song, for Adorn, we can believe that the man is quite capable of holding his own when it comes to performing. To those who have heard the Kaleidoscope Dream album, you will know there is more to the man than Do You? and Adorn.
He talks about social issues in Candles in the Sun which provides a conscious side to him. How Many Drinks? sees him in the club trying to get a girl drunk so he can take her home with him.
There is a lot of range in the subjects he covers and his sweet voice makes it all the better.
The man will give two shows with one at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena tonight and the other at the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch on Sunday. Local opening acts include Zakes Bantwini, Teargas, Donald and last year’s SA Idols winner, Khaya Mthethwa. – Munya Vomo
