GIG OF THE WEEK:
Hansa Festival of Legends
Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown |(Tomorrow)
You have seen the adverts and you have waited for the longest time and now the Hansa Festival of Legends is finally coming to Joburg.
The coolest thing about this gig is that Brenda Fassie (pictured) will be there, too.
For one night only, Hansa Pilsner will have the legend perform through holographic projection technology.
Those who are in the know are aware that this technology almost raises the dead back to life at the push of a button.
Not so long ago rapper Snoop Lion did a complete show with Tupac Shakur.
Although some people did not warm up to it, many commended the innovation, saying it took them back to a time when hip hop was in its prime.
In tomorrow’s show, a group of audio-visual professionals have been developing the technology for Fassie’s classics.
A 10-minute video featuring an actress made up to look like Fassie will be projected on the specially-built foil screen
to give the effect that she is still with us.
Never mind the technical jargon.
The entire show will be something to look forward to as it is a South African first.
The beauty of it all is that on some of the songs “Brenda Fassie” will perform with her son, Bongani Fassie, who is also a musician.
Then Bongani will take over with the help of Kelly Khumalo and The Soil to perform a 45-minute tribute to the singer who was dubbed “the Madonna of the townships by Time magazine in 2001.
In the spirit of honouring artists with tributes, other big names such as Lebo Mathosa, Zaki Ibrahim and Sipho
Hotstix Mabuse will have some time allocated to them as well.
And for you kwaito-heads there will be a special tribute to legends such as Spikiri, Thebe, Mdu and Arthur.
You do not need convincing to be at this mother of all parties.
Other acts will include DJ Kent, Nothende, Lulo Cafe, Skwatta Kamp, TKZee, Professor, DJ Cleo and The Soil.
R150 gets you in and you can get your tickets from Computicket. – Munyaradzi Vomo
