GIG OF THE WEEK

Nduduzo Makhatini Quintet

The Orbit (tonight, 7pm)

If you are a sucker for jazz music genius, then the Nduduzo Makhatini Quartet show at The Orbit (81 de Korte St, Braamfontein) is not to be missed.

Makhatini, a pianist, has garnered much acclaim as a trendsetter for the innovative way he handles the keys. Now based in Joburg, he orginally hails from KZN where he studied for a diploma in jazz piano.

Although his voice is not his strongest feature, the way he effortlessly blends it with his piano-playing skills arouses a sense of nostalgia, taking you back to the greats like Ray Charles or Duke Ellington. It is so evident that he practices a lot because although he uses a lot of experimentation in his music, there is nothing accidental about Makhatini’s craft or sound.

Seasoned musicians including Feya Faku, Simphiwe Dana and Thandiswa Mazwai have all worked with the talented Makhatini.

Joining him will be Ayanda Sika on drums, Mthunzi Mvubu on sax, Ariel Zamonsky on bass and Robin Fassie Kock on the trumpet. All these individuals are masters in their own right and they complement each other beautifully. So if you couldn’t make it to any of the esteemed jazz festivals, The Orbit brings the music to you. – Tonight Reporter
