GIG OF THE WEEK:

Now that the important people have left Gauteng for the Samas, things are about to get interesting in Joburg. We have not one, but two international acts in town. These are the legendary rock band that got me into rock, Bon Jovi, (tomorrow), and arguably the most popular kid on the planet, Justin Bieber (Sunday).

Growing up I had a strong liking for Brian Adams, Meatloaf and Bon Jovi. Although my mates believe that this does not make me a rock ’n’ roll fan, I know otherwise. Bon Jovi’s material may be softer compared to Metallica’s, but still, it does it for some people.

Which is why Soccer City will be full of fans like me singing to Bed of Roses and Keep the Faith. The show is set to be opened by two former contestants from Idols, the talented Elvis Blue and the underrated Mark Haze.

They are obviously the right people for this gig as sometimes you get a Khuli Chana or Toya Delazy at a non-hip hop gig and wonder what that’s about.

Already the word coming from Cape Town is that these guys killed it there so we can expect nothing less. Tickets range from R625 to R825.

Then comes the teen Canadian sensation, Justin Bieber (pictured) on Sunday who has already rocked Cape Town.

Calling all Beliebers out there, your king is here and on Sunday he will show you just why he is the most talked about youngster in the world.

Forget the bad press; just concentrate on the fact that you get to see him while he is in his prime, unlike the other musicians we get who are washed-up acts.

The interesting thing is you would think the teen girls of South Africa would be the happiest to see the youngster, but there are older women who’ll also be him cheering on. And, no, they will not be accompanying a kid.

Pretty dodge, that. It’s almost like seeing a grown man like me at a Selena Gomez show. But then again, we can all claim we are there for the music, right?

Like Bon Jovi, Bieber will also play at Soccer City stadium. Tickets are R315 to R750, at www.bigconcerts.co.za, or Computicket. – Munya Vomo
