GIG OF THE WEEK

Snoop Lion

Ellis Park Arena

(Tonight)

Not too long ago I had a conversation with a friend and mentioned that Snoop Lion was coming to the country.

“Who?” my friend replied.

So I had to explain that the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg was now known by the moniker, Snoop Lion.

Of course, she did not believe me until I showed her his CD. I don’t blame her though, as many fans of the legendary rapper are not aware that the man has turned over a new leaf, “leaf” being a key word in his transformation.

If you need to experience the new look, like most hip hop fans would, then you need to go to Ellis Park and see him first-hand.

Now reincarnated in the spirit of Bob Marley, Snoop has moved away from the gun violence material to cleaner songs about good morals. At this rate he’ll probably encourage kids to stay in school and go to church.

But the problem that comes with this is that he may have to perform his older rap songs that we all loved for what he may now perceive as the wrong reasons.

And it’ll be interesting to hear him sing the chorus of What’s My Name? as he chants his old name.

And I have tried to sing it with Snoop Lion as the replacement hook, but it just sounds silly. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Tickets: R350 to R650 at Computicket. The show starts at 7pm. Opening acts include AKA and Jack Parrow. Call 011 402 8644 for more details. – Munya Vomo
