GIG OF THE WEEK

Black Jesus Experience (BJX)

The Orbit, Braamfontein

(tonight)

Ever heard of Ethio-jazz? This is a good reason to be at The Orbit (81 De Korte St, Braamfontien) tonight to see the Black Jesus Experience.

The Melbourne outfit is here for a few events including the MTN Bushfire Festival to be held in Swaziland next weekend.

The band, also known as BJX, is comprised of Enushe Taye (vocals), Negat Abate (vocals), Mr Monk (MC), Tibor Bacskai (MC), Peter Harper (sax), Ian Dixon (trumpet, flugelhorn), Zac Lister (guitar), Chris Frangou (bass) and Matt Head (drums). Taye, who is from Addis Ababa, exposed the group to Ethiopian music and culture. There is a huge Ethiopian community in Melbourne and the band has made use of that to hone their craft.

Through this community and the shekla (records) of Addis Ababa’s golden ’70s, BJX discovered the depth and groove of Ethio-jazz.

After a chance meeting with the originator and master of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke, on a tour to Africa, BJX toured and recorded with him, giving them a chance to study and create at the “master’s table”. Once they are done with this gig and Bushfire, BJX head to Ethiopia to record a new album.

Outside of jazz, BJX have also found a place for hip hop in their sound. – Munya Vomo

l The event starts at 7pm. Admission TBA. Go out there to learn a little about the world. Tel: 011 339 6645.
