GIG OF THE WEEK

Remember your roots benefit concert

Various Artists

The Havana Lounge, Westonaria (Tomorrow and Sunday)

Zakes Bantwini

A job well done to Molite Productions for giving us the |third annual Remember Your |Roots Benefit Concert.

Formed by Reggie Govner Nkabinde, the concert aims to, among other things, mobilise, equip, organise, empower and celebrate the youth through the arts.

While previous years have featured interesting line-ups, |this year’s will be the best by far.

We have a reunited Mafikizolo with their hit Khona, which is almost something out of the |Salif Keita songbook. The duo |is on point when it comes to their fashion, dancing and singing. They know their work is good so they work hard to perfect it.

Since they have just released a new album, there’s a good chance we will hear some of the new songs. But steadfast fans will also want to hear the old songs such as Ndihamba Nawe and Emlangeni which I am sure they will perform.

Still on great performers, Durban boy Zakes Bantwini |will also take to the stage with |his signature moves. He will most probably do all his favourite tracks and close his set with Karolina |or Stop Wasting My Time. At that point it won’t matter what song he closes with as Bantwini could even give the national anthem some serious oomph, making it a crazy dance tune.

If these two acts are not your cup of tea, perhaps crooner Donald will make the magic for you.

Riding high on the Denial |wave, there is no denying that the narcissistic singer is immensely gifted. At some point he will probably take some international R&B tune and give it the Donald touch. His female fans like this part of the show. The showstopper will be I Deserve, which has the people going wild from the first bass note.

Then, for those of you who are into quieter sounds that celebrate the use of the voice only, The Soil will be there to quench your thirst.

This trio really make all the 1990 boy bands wish they could come back and do what they did best – sing harmonies.

These are just some of the top artists we have space to list here, but expect to see more than 30 acts performing.

Others include, but are not limited to, Tswakae, Eddie Zondi, Paul Mtirara, Ralf Gum, Glen Lewis, China, Fistax Mixwell, Lulo Café, DJ Pepsi, DJ Ganyane, DJ Mgedeza, DJ Shabbir, DJ Zinhle, Big Nuz and DJ Thato.

The show is a double bill taking place tomorrow and Sunday. The show ends with a jazz session. |– Munya Vomo
