GIG OF THE WEEK

Turn Up With Ms Cosmo

Blue Room Hatfield

(Tuesday)

It is a golden hip hop era in South Africa and yet there aren’t any female rappers stepping up to the plate. There is a lot of room for them, but there seems to be few ladies brave enough to make the move. We have had Nadia Nakai and Gigi LaMayne, who have been making a bit of noise with singles, but we are yet to see them develop their own projects. So while we enjoy what Boyz’nBuckz and the CashTime Life crews’ put out there, we still do not have a South African Nicki Minaj or Iggy Azealea.

While we wait for that to finally take place, we can take comfort in the fact that Ms Cosmo, a renowned hip hop DJ, is holding down the hip hop fort for the ladies.

Playing on Tuesday at the Turn Up event at the Blue Room (cnr Festival and Arcadia streets, Hatfield), this skillful female DJ will show why hip hop on the decks is not exclusively a man’s game. In fact, without mentioning any names, there are some established male DJs who could learn a thing or two from this talented lady.

Like ILOVEMAKONNEN and Drake, Ms Cosmo “got the club goin’ up, on a Tuesday” and if you’ve seen her in action, you will probably forget all about your Wednesday responsibilities.

The event is hosted by Mo Flava and apart from Ms Cosmo, DJ Speedsta will also feature on the decks. – Munya Vomo

• The event starts at 8pm. Call Tumelo at 072 436 5949 for more information.
