GIG OF THE WEEK

In the City Presents Bloc Party

Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown (tonight)

It is going to be insane tonight when Vodacom Unlimited, with In The City, bring you the Bloc Party.

To be hosted at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, fans will be treated to an array of talented acts which will include The Shadow-club; Tumi (who will feature Yesterday’s Pupil); Die Antwoord; Bloc Party (pictured); and DJ Yoda.

This is undoubtedly a fiesta of sound and you will regret it if you don’t make it.

Tonight is on record as saying The Shadowclub are “the most authentic and real rock band to come out of South Africa since the Nineties. International quality. International appeal. Rock star all the way.”

If you have heard any of their singles you will know how polished and creative they can be. If not, then there is a great reason to experience a true South African rock interpretation.

And if that type of music doesn’t rock your boat then perhaps you want to try out the rapper Tumi, who will be backed by Yesterday’s Pupil – a combination that is worth the watch, as they have worked well together before.

Who needs an introduction to Die Antwoord, the duo who have made crazy fashionable but back it up with impressive music?

Yes, the zef duo will be there, so expect some incredible stage presence. It would interesting to see Tumi and Die Antwoord’s Ninja do a rap face-off.

Then we look at the international acts coming through for the gig. DJ Yoda is (as they call it today) a “sick” master of the turntables whose sound of preference is hip hop. His claim |to fame is being able to make meaningful sounds but of a cartoon nature. Just think what Alvin the Chipmunk would have on his playlist.

Bloc Party will no doubt own the night. The British indie rock band consists of Gordon Moakes, Matt Tong, Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack.

If you are a fan of Radiohead or The Cure then you will enjoy Bloc Party, as their sound is influenced by those kinds of bands.

Their most recent album, Four, was released only a few weeks ago, in August, so you will be among the first in the world to hear the material live.

Gates open at 7pm. R265 general access. Tel: 011 788 8725. – Munyaradzi Vomo
