Stand out with these 3 summer looks!
Perhaps it’s in their name – Sondagskool Helde. Perhaps it’s in the way they play angry rock ’n’ roll. Either way, Sondagskool Helde (pictured) ain’t nuttin’ ta f**k wit!
“We used to call ourselves Tweede van Regs,” the four current band members say.
Like many young groups, they have had quite a few member and name changes. This is reflected in the title of their debut album – Nuwe Avontuur.
“Yeah , we had five drummers. But this album is where the adventure starts.”
Sondagskool Helde sing only in Afrikaans but believe Afrikaans music has stagnated.
“People think anything outside of VanFokkingTasties is s**t.”
VanFokkingTasties consists of Van Coke Kartel, Fokofpolisiekar, aKing and Die Heuwels Fantasties. After the demise of the Springbok Nude Girls these bands jumped in and led a revival of alternative Afrikaans rock/pop punk.
Their commercial success has dictated the way Afrikaans rock is performed. Sondagskool Helde have fallen into that category. However, they have defined themselves with anti-everything lyrics. Their music crosses the boundaries between adult contemporary rock, angsty ballads and angry punk.
Sondagskool Helde promise they are here to change things.
“We’re hoping to reignite things. We are not the solution, but we are going to work towards it. We think new bands are afraid to experiment.”
Their music comes in all forms. There are influences from the Deftones, Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana.
“This album is everything we can do. We can be happy. We can be heavy. There is a lot of freedom of expression. Music is music and it doesn’t have to belong to a genre.”
They do not believe that singing in Afrikaans is restrictive.
“Afrikaans is not a genre, it is a language. What is worrying is if it’s a bit hard people think it’s Fokof.”
The Pretoria band are touring the Western Cape.
“We want to **** it up there, hence the name of the tour – Onder Draai die Duiwel.
