High seas can’t sink DJ’s party spirit

One of the biggest South African parties, off the South African coast, has to be the Oh Ship gig.

Coming to you for the third year, and captained by the talented DJs Fresh and Euphonik, the voyage is made possible by their partnership with Savannah Premium Cider.

On November 28, a luxury cruiseliner will leave Durban harbour headed for Portuguese Island and return to Durban on December 1.

As is tradition on the Oh Ship experience, several parties will take place concurrently and apart from DJs Fresh and Euphonik, other entertainers on board will include Kent, SPHEctacula, Naves, Roger Goode, MiCasa and the charismatic DJ Cosmo.

“I have never played on Oh Ship before so I am excited. I played on a DStv cruise a few months ago. It was with a different demographic, with older people, so it wasn’t as interesting as I think Oh Ship will be,” said DJ Cosmo.

So what does a DJ do on a boring ship?

“You just do your set and then you go and get drunk,” said Cosmo, laughing.

At least with this gig there is more to do than just play a set and drink. For Cosmo the Oh Ship party offers a lot to look forward to.

“Because I work for the station (5FM) I will be broadcasting my show from the ship as well as. My show airs on Sunday nights. We only get back on Monday so that will be great for my show.

“I am quite keen because it is going to be a younger market who will understand my music so it will be more of a party vibe,” said the DJ.

To those who will be on the ship for the first time, there are several things you will need to be aware of before embarking.

“There is no cellphone signal so all you can do is party. We don’t want the anti-socials on board as they will just kill the mood,” she explained.

Zooming in on her set, the Channel O and 5FM DJ refused to say what people could expect from her on the boat.

“I will be DJ-ing at some of the parties that will take place on the boat, but I don’t know what I will play. Normally, DJs don’t plan what to play until they are on the decks. You can’t do that (plan in advance) because you don’t know what the guy before you will be playing.

“So you listen and vibe your crowd and play whatever you think will work for them. I am a hip hop DJ so if the guy before me played current hip hop hits, I can just go back to old-school and still get the people loving that vibe,” she explained.

Given that this will be a different environment from where we usually see Cosmo playing, she warned that there will be some changes her fans should expect.

“Being on a boat means it will be far more casual so I want to go with that theme.

“When I am in a club I am usually all dressed up and wear heels, but on the boat, who knows, I might DJ in a bikini, if the weather is right.”

If you make it onto the ship, then you might as well join Cosmo in some downtime activities.

“I am going to be having fun and I am trying to bring a few of my friends along.

“We will be docking at the Portuguese Islands and will go there and play in the sand. We will also have a braai there. So it’s like an entire holiday where I will work, but also have fun,” she said.

Some people are really worried about getting sea sick or even sinking, but not this DJ.

“I am a very adventurous person and have gone for things like shark cage diving, sky diving, all those kinds of things,” she said.
