Idols need to step it up

IF the judges on Idols SA want to switch the game in the show – that is aside from them not using their save this year – how about a moratorium on comments like “the competition’s hotting up” or “it’s anybody’s game”.

Seriously now, its bad enough we have to applaud the “talent” as great finds but to listen to these stale observations – it’s driving me insane enough to rush out and buy a David Hasselhof CD because it boasts Grammy award-winning tracks. Not.

Back to the reality series, we are now down to the Top 4 with Simphiwe Gwegwe from Port Nolloth bowing out in last night’s results show. Meanwhile, Monde Msutwana, who Randall Abrahams predicted would be at risk, jumped for joy having dodged the dream crushing bullet.

The announcement was made after guest performer Donald, who was nominated for Channel O Music Video Award’s Most Gifted Newcomer honours, belted out ‘Denial’.

That the judges didn’t warm up to Simphiwe’s renditions of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’ and Bonnie Raitt’s ‘I Cant Make You Love Me’, which was selected for him by Highveld 94.7, was rather telling on Sunday.

Abrahams summed it up best when he said: “Sometimes it’s not about you, it’s about the song. Once again, I thought it was oversung, histrionic and heartless.”

Although I feel the judges were on point to decide against saving him, I do wonder if there is a praiseworthy Idol among the remaining contestants – that is, aside from Tshidi Tenyane, 29, who is probably the saving grace where the talent pool is concerned.

This week, Khaya Mthethwa will be performing Zahara’s ‘Lengoma’ and Springbok Nude Girls ‘Blue Eyes’, Msutwana will tackle Brian Temba’s ‘Dominoes’ and Watershed’s ‘Indigo Girl’, Melissa Allison sings The Arrows’ ‘Lovesick’ and Mafikizolo’s ‘Ndihamba Nawe’ and Tenyane will attempt to make Zamajobe’s ‘Ndawo Yami’ and Freshlygrond’s ‘Doo Bee Doo’ her own in the Homebrew edition, which will feature DJ Black Coffee mentoring the hopefuls.

Before I forget, Unathi Msengana might want to ease back on the glitter – on Tuesday, she was looking like Edward Cullen in ‘Twilight’. Maybe just dazzle us with your smile on Sunday.

The next Idols show is on Sunday at 5.30pm on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) and Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 107). The Idols Results Show is on M-Net on Tuesday at 7.30pm. - The Star
