Cape Town - South African pop act LCNVL have been named best African act in a recent poll ahead of the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) and look set to compete in Amsterdam on November 10 for the top title.
Twin brothers Brian and Andrew Chaplin squared off against local afro-pop sensation Mafikizolo and Nigerian acts P-Square and Wizkid, and Fuse ODG from Ghana, to win the local leg.
But they’ll only compete for the MTV best worldwide act award if they make it through the next round of voting, which closes on Thursday.
The twins, aged 23, are ecstatic.
Andrew said in an MTV press release: “I did my jumping thing; this is amazing news. I honestly didn’t know what the outcome would be.”
Brian said they drove their campaign for votes by punting the link on social media and relying on friends to vote.
“I would hope our music sets us apart,” he said.
The structuring of the voting pits them against an act from India, Yo Yo Honey Singh, and one from the Middle East, Ahmed Soultan.
Next Friday, the youth culture TV station will announce the regional winner for Africa, India and the Middle East. This winner will become one of 10 finalists for the worldwide act at the EMAs on November 10.
For the final they could be up against Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus.
Brian said they had been getting votes from Germany, the Netherlands and the US, where their mother lives.
He is unsure if they will be attending the EMA event, at which Miley, Robin Thicke, Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry are set to perform.
“Winning this award is hugely important. It will bring endless possibilities. Andrew and I hugely believe that our music just needs to be heard.
“Our plan for next year is to work on the international market. After our new release, we want to tour the States and the UK,” he said.
