Amstel Golden Hour has set high standards when it comes to specialised performances at strategic festivals. The performance by TKZee and a full orchestra at the Mbombela Stadium was memorable. This was particularly so because, unlike other kwaito acts, TKZee’s music lends itself beautifully to orchestral music, mostly because Zwai Bala is classically trained.
This year at Macufe, Amstel Golden Hour will also create great memories when Mafikizolo team up with top motswako rapper Khuli Chana in what will be a great collaboration.
“We first did a feature with Khuli at an award ceremony,” says Mafikizolo’s Theo Kgosinkwe. “From then on we realised that we could continue and take it further. Khuli is such a good guy and very chilled and talented. For the Amstel Golden Hour we wanted something different, something new. This is going to be a challenge for us and a challenge for him.”
Chana is also excited to play with Mafikizolo.
“They are the biggest group on the continent,” he said.
“Sharing the stage with them is a dream, especially on a platform like Macufe.”
This is the second time that Mafikizolo have been asked to play Amstel Golden Hour which is testament to the massive success of their return album, Reunited.
Artists who have shown before include The Soil, HHP, L’Vovo and Zonke.
In terms of what the artists will be performing, Kgosinkwe said they would decide at the rehearsals later this week.
“We want to try and marry the two sounds and see how it goes,” he said.
“The question will be how do we improvise on each other’s music. It must make sense for both of us.”
Kgosinkwe also said he was a fan of hip hop.
“I have loved hip hop since I was growing up. South African hip hop has gone to another level.
“It has really grown and matured so much.”
He also could not contain his excitement about yet another act they had planned for the event.
“We have something up our sleeve which is another surprise collaboration,” he said.
“It’s an ace card and people are not going to expect it. This will be a moment of surprise for the crowd.”
