on a roll: Mafikizolo won the best album award, among others, last night.

THE BIGGEST night in South Africa’s music industry was one of glitz, new faces and exciting performances.

The comeback kids of 2013 – Mafikizolo – dominated the 20th annual South African Music Awards last night with eight honours.

The duo were a favourite with their hit songs Khona and Happiness.

Some of their awards included album of the year for Reunited and best duo/ group.

Their sweep of awards was matched only by Zahara, with eight Samas at the 2012 awards.

This year, Zahara won best female, while Kabomo won best male.

In one of their acceptance speeches, Mafikizolo praised their record company Kalawa Jazmee and the part it played in South Africa’s music industry.

Just like the Sama awards, Kalawa Jazmee is celebrating 20 years in the music industry, and the independent record company is still on top of its game.

The managing director of Kalawa Jazmee, Oskido – whose real name is Oscar Mdlongwa – also had reason to celebrate when he won his first Sama. His massive hit Tsa Ma Ndebele won for the best remix.

The ceremony at Sun City featured performances by best alternative album winner Nakhane Toure, Zakes Bantwini, the Soweto Gospel Choir and Uhuru.

Best rap winner iFani gave an explosive performance of his hit single Milli.

Other winners included Van Coke Cartel for best rock, and, for the second time, the best kwaito album went to Big Nuz.

Gospel singer Rebecca Malope received her 15th Sama award for best traditional faith music.

Best newcomer was KwaZulu-Natal songstress Naima Kay, while MiCasa took home the best dance album Sama trophy.

Lifetime achievement awards went to Phuzek-hemisi and the Grammy award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They shared the stage with him and received a standing ovation.
