Wayde a minute! A record-setting South African athlete didn’t trot onto the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) nominees list? Those who will be going for gold at the ceremony that takes place on October 22 were announced at a swanky do in Johannesburg last night.
And Wayde wa bantwana Van Niekerk wasn’t on the list.
Only nine categories were announced – the rest will be revealed at a similar do in Lagos, Nigeria on October 2. Now, we know what you’re thinking: what does Wayde van Niekerk have to do with the MTV Africa Music (ahem!) Awards?
Well, for years, the awards have branched out of celebrating musicians only. Yo MAMA is here for all that African excellence. As such, the Personality of the Year category sometimes includes musicians but also recognises Africans who have made the continent proud in industries outside of the music game.
In 2014, Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong’o was the winner. And this year’s MAMAs host and South African comedian, Trevor Noah, scooped the award in 2015.
Oh, by the way: thanks for listening to our suggestions for an African host, MAMA team. But we digress. This year’s nominees in the Personality of the Year category are a mixed bag. There’s South African actress, Pearl Thusi who is slaying in American series, Quantico, and there’s Nigerian muso, Wizkid, whose been posted up with Drake and ‘em all year long.
They are up against Nigerian blogger, Linda Ikeji, Gabonese soccer player, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and South African Olympic gold medalist, Caster Semenya. So Wayde may not be in the running – hehe – this year but we’re not sad about those who are.
And if you care more about the music in these music awards, check out the rest of the nominees here. Who is your monopoly money on?
