The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has extended its condolences to the family and friends of pop singer Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday.

"Ms Houston sang for (former president) Mr Nelson Mandela at a White House dinner in his honour in October 1994," the centre's spokesman Sello Hatang said in a statement on Monday.

"She dedicated to him her rendition of the song, 'Greatest Love of All'... May she rest in peace".

The 48-year-old singer was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel at the weekend. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. - Sapa
