If a bomb had to be dropped on Greyville Racecourse this Saturday, we would lose almost the entire kwaito and hip-hop community as well as most of the house DJs. The Vodacom Durban July has singularly become the biggest music event outside of the Metro FM Awards and the MTN South African Music Awards.

Let’s start with Kalawa Jazmee. A R1 500 a ticket gets you a welcom- ing cocktail and a day with the entire stable that are Kalawa.

There will be performances from Spikiri to Oskido, to Black Motion to Vetkuk vs Mahoota and Dr Malinga as well as the so-hot-right-now Mafikizolo. BOP will make an appearance for old time’s sake, while Trompies will showcase some of their new tracks as well as their old hits. Kalawa are going head to head with Afrotainment’s popular after party at People’s Park.

They are hosting theirs at the practice fields of Kings Park.

Kalawa Jazmee’s tent is in the Lifestyle Oasis Village.

Afrotainment have teamed up with Metro FM and Amstel for its marquee. It will be hosted by DJ Tira and aside from DJ sessions by Metro DJs like Amon Mokoena and Sphetacula and Naves, there will also be performances by the Afrotainment stable.

That includes Big Nuz, Bhar, Joocy and DJ Cndo. Metro FM will broadcast live from the marquee from midday to 6pm.

Adding to the Afrotainment is a fashion showcase by Zarth and Fabrosandz. Tickets are almost sold out for that event, but e-mail [email protected]

And then there is the Fact Durban Rocks afterparty that attracts about 10 000 people, most of whom did not attend the July.

MTV Base is hosting guests at the Eagle Air Village. Two years ago it was the talk of the event owing to its unique tent design as well as the entertainment provided. This year will be no exception.

It covers more than 8 000m2 and is spread over six giant inflatable domes. Entertainment will be provided by Professor, Dr Malinga, Vetkuk & Mahoota as well as Black Coffee and Lcnvl. They join come- dians John Vlismas, Tumi Morake and Mpho Popps.

The Eagle Air village is open from 10am. Tickets are available at Computicket.

The Miller Boomtown Marquee couples with 5FM to bring out the American rapper, 2Chainz. He will be sharing the stage with Khuli Chana and rapper AKA. Khuli and AKA will also be doing the Ultimix with Catherine Grenfell live from the tent.

Miller are celebrating 10 years and end on Sunday with Pop Bottles at Chris Saunders Park. This, claim the beer brand, will be a proudly South African hip hop line-up.

Finally, the G&G Live Marquee focuses on a the Samsung # Galaxy Experience. They are offering 5FM’s DJ Fresh and Roger Good. Lulo Café makes an appearance as do a whole lotta other DJs. The tickets start from R495.

There is also a VVIP ticket with access to the Skyy VVIP lounge area where patrons will be treated to an open bar until 6pm.
