GIG OF THE WEEK
Jazz on the lake
Zoo Lake (Sunday)
If the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz left you wanting more, then this should be right up your alley.
The Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival, which will begin on Sunday, starts with the Jazz on the Lake concert at Zoo Lake (Princess of Wales Drive, Parkwood).
This has become known as the free annual daytime concert which is Joburg’s unofficial welcoming of spring.
So if you have not been working out, you are going to feel excluded when everyone around you is showing some skin.
This festival has been taking place for 21 years, and this year features a talented line-up.
The bill includes Kwaai jazz pianist and producer Don Laka; top Maskandi artist Phuzekhemisi; the recently reunited Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo; new kid on the block Brenda Mntambo; New Orleans jazz giants Satchmo Trumpet Summit; a gospel group, India’s Sufi Gospel Project; and new artists from the Puisano programme. You are obviously spoilt for choice.
As usual, there will be a number of road closures around the area and a system of park-and-rides will also be in place.
This will include the famous e-Tuk-Tuks.
The park-and-ride buses will be available from the following points:
• Joburg Metro Building, Braamfontein.
• Alexandra Football Stadium – Alexandra.
The park and ride service will run from 9am until 9pm and as follows:
• From 9am to 1pm every half-hour.
• From 5.30pm to 8pm every half-hour.
Members of the public can catch a Rea Vaya bus to the Metro Building in Braamfontein (opposite the Joburg Theatre), from where they can access the park-and-ride buses to Zoo Lake.
Without resident parking passes, you will not be able to access the area in your car.
Since there will be a series of road closures which will be strictly enforced, you are encouraged to use the park-and-ride facilities.
No weapons and alcohol will be allowed in the venue.
Those who would like to drink on the premises will be served from the beer garden.
You can, however, bring picnic baskets, camping chairs and blankets for maximum comfort
on the lawns.
Gates open at 10am.
