GIG OF THE WEEK

It’s always a big deal when Strings and Skins perform – well, for those who love organic, melodious and spiritual music, that is.

They’re fresh from the National Arts Festival and they’re still enchanting audiences with their majestic blend of sounds.

With Greg Georgiades on strings such as the oud, bouzouki, oudtar and the nylon string guitar, and Ashish Joshi on the tabla, darbuka, zarb and more, they know how to put you in the clouds.

But this time they’re joined by prolific guest artists making this a Strings and Skins Wide Ensemble. Collaborations elevate their musicianship to an intuitive and spontaneous level. There’s the wonderful Andries Bruyns on the djembe, didgeridoo and toys, as well as the magnificent Chris Tokalon from Cape Town on the soprano sax, the flute and the hang – which is a Swiss development on the Caribbean steel pan drum that produces a far-reaching sound. Tokalon is also known to conduct and host “sound journeys” – meditative rituals that use natural sounds to help the body and mind reach a state of stillness – and they’re really worthwhile.
