Most six-year-olds only have to worry about catching cooties and waiting for the tooth fairy to show up. But Cape Town’s Rocking The Daisies is different.
Sure, in the past five years, festivalgoers who partied a little too hard have had to make sure they had medical aid that covers various dental procedures.
But chances are, no one attending Rocking The Daisies is afraid of catching cooties.
To celebrate six years as one of the premiere rock festivals in this country, the first weekend of October is going to be a very interesting one.
Some of South Africa’s finest musicians will start the party and show a few of the most intriguing international rock and electronic music bands a thing or two.
But, having established itself as a rock lifestyle festival, there are other things to Rocking The Daisies that aren’t solely focused on the music.
For instance, although everyone should travel to the middle of nowhere and brave dust in their eyes, in their weaves and in their tents to get drunk and watch their favourite bands live all weekend, it’s not everyone’s cup of tequila.
What is it that the film folks always say? Ah, yes… location, location, location.
Rocking The Daisies takes place on a huge wine estate with a back-drop of undulating mountain, which makes the experience a memorable one.
You can row on the river, or swim when you’re not watching the music.
And you can add to that the fact that there is always a variety of new sounds to be heard.
Take Nu World Beat Ring, for example. This is a stage for the term we all hate using when describing something that refuses to be boxed in: world music.
Over three days, there will be a variety of balkanology and instrumental vibes that are inspired by traditional music from all over the world.
Awesome, right?
We know what you’re thinking: how do we get to this cool festival? Well, there are a number of ways.
As is tradition, you can cycle to the Daisies. This year 150 cyclists will get on their bikes and 350km later, will arrive at the weekend-long party.
There will also be 100 people who will take part in the Fruit and Veg Walk To The Daisies, which will be a walk on the beach along the West Coast landscape.
Bobs For Good and Walking The Daisies will ask everyone who plans to walk to donate R150 towards school shoes for needy children.
For the first time, there will be a Daisies Plane. Velvet Sky Airlines is offering an amazing deal for Joburgers who are keen to attend the Cape Town festival.
For only R999, you can get return flights and your weekend pass to the festival. Pick your jaw up. There are only 200 seats available.
For its sixth year in the game, it looks like Rocking The Daisies is upping the stakes when it comes to the extras.
Rocking The Daisies takes place at Cloof Wine Estate in Darling from October 7 to 9.
Tickets for the weekend are R450 and are available at Fruit and Veg outlets and on www.webtickets.co.za.
