Colorado Conservatory For The Jazz Arts
The Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young people to express themselves through the language of jazz.
For their Hang Time album, two young men, Eric Gunnison and Greg Gisbert, were tasked with recording their own music, and so the bands on the CD, Group Giz and Group Gunn, set about challenging each other with an eclectic but original repertoire that encompasses many styles.
The album is an encouraging indication that there are young musicians who have developed a love of jazz and are inspired to compose and record this art form (just as I was starting to lose hope). It is with sadness that I regularly record the growing list of deaths of jazz musicians in my magazine The Jassman.
I am happy to announce that the future of jazz appears to be in good hands through the efforts of colleges such as the CCJA.
For more information on the college go to www.jazzarts.org and to order the CD go to www.caprirecords.com.
BB King & Friends
Revolver Classic Concerts: The Bluesmaster DVD
The competition today is sponsored by Revolver Records and if you would like their free catalogue, e-mail Justine@iafrica.com.
The Bluesmaster DVD features BB King and artists including Albert King, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dr John, Etta James, Paul Butterfield and Gladys Knight performing in archived material in a concert. The duet between Dr John and the late Etta James is one of the many highlights. King and Clapton put on a great show years before their hit album Riding With The King. An interesting addition is a teenage guest, Billy Ocean.
Who is the teenager in The Bluesmaster concert?
Revolver records have made 10 copies of the DVD available. Please submit your entries only by e-mail. Submit only one entry per competition to jassmanquiz@ yahoo.com, and include your name, postal address and contact numbers as I call the winners and confirm the delivery address and the answers. The competition closes at noon on Saturday.
