A new production team is about to broaden our musical horizons with some good catchy tunes.

Going by the name of KrayZee N, the Durban duo of Andrew Ord and Hezron Chetty have an interesting approach to creating and dispersing their music.

“We are essentially a songwriting/production team who use a wide variety of producers and artists to make music,” explains Ord. “I am the natural feely muso who plays guitar and is a singer/ songwriter. Hezron is a classically trained violinist, so he’s good on the technical side.”

KrayZee N are intent on making multi-genre, multi-cultural music.

“We want to draw from each other’s backgrounds, like a constant episode of Jam Sandwich,” Ord continues. “Having said that, we want to make it commercially accessible and successful.”

Instead of making full-length albums, they are looking to make radio-friendly tracks that will be available exclusively on the Net.

Their first release is an epic pop/ hip hop song featuring top South African artists Incha, Young Nations and Pixie Bennett.

The song is called Get My Way. There is a driving guitar riff overlaid with a catchy violin melody and Young Nations rapping in his deep style, while Bennett completes it with an even catchier chorus. All this over a cool hip hop beat.

It sounds like a bit of a mish-mash, but the track works well. Ord describes the creative process that led to the track: “Get My Way started with rock guitar and violin. Then we bought in a producer from Durban, Grayim Cavanagh, to lay down the hip hop beat. At the time Hezron was teaching Incha advanced violin improvising techniques. He played her the track and she loved it and agreed to do a solo on it.

“We’d also heard her track where Young Nations featured as a rapper. We thought he’d be perfect for Get My Way because his voice is authorative and strong.

“When you have big guitar sounds, you need a commanding vocal presence. Then, because he’s so powerful, we needed a feminine voice and Pixie has a good pop voice.”

Get My Way is due to be aired on East Coast Radio and is enjoying success as a cellphone download.

It is one of the hottest tracks to come from the underground in 2010 and is sure to enjoy broader airplay in 2011.

That’s assuming our dull radio stations deign to pick it up.
