The 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards took place last night in Glasgow. Hosted by the sassy Nikki Minaj, the ceremony celebrated the 20th anniversary of the awards' existence. They were also coming back to Scotland for the first time in ten years.
Although the press was not happy about Minaj skipping the red carpet when it came to hosting, she was in her element given that she is known for her acquired English accent. She tailor-made her material for the audience, including a rap sample that had the locals screaming.
Moreover, her sexually charged skits throughout the night fitted perfectly with her current hit Anaconda, which she also performed.
Unlike the days prior to the awards, which were dampened by the Scottish autumn rains, the night of the awards had good weather and so the likes of David Hasselhof, our own Sizwe Dhlomo and LMFAO's Redfoo could wear kilts in keeping with the Scottish tradition.
The golden voiced Ariana Grande is a living testimony of the theory that the TV adds ten pounds as she appeared really uncomfortably petite. However when it came to her stage performance the singer, who is often compared to the great Mariah Carey, showed that dynamite really does come in small packages. Other memorable performances came from the legendary U2 and ladies man Ed Sheeren.
There were a few disappointments: although Enrique Iglesias won an award on the night, his performance highlighted his shortcomings as a singer. And, while it was quite something to hear Alicia Keys perform, it was a bit of an anti-climax. Then again, she is said to be very pregnant and this was her last performance until she gives birth, so perhaps we should forgive her.
Still on disappointments, it would've been great to see Katy Perry at the show given that she won a number of the awards.
Foul-mouthed icon of cool Slash presented the Global Icon award to Ozzy Osbourne, who appeared more eager to leave the stage than to thank his fans. The same thing had happened at the red carpet (which was actually black) where Ozzy arrived with his wife Sharon. Even as they were being interviewed, Ozzy barely stood still and seemed quite keen to escape the attention.
Throughout the night, one thing that could not be disputed was the quality of production on the humongous stage. The full effects of these efforts were witnessed during the closing performance by Slash in honour of Ozzy. A combination of flamethrowers and ignited balloons looked dangerous, almost hellish, and created the atmosphere for a rocking end to an amazing show.
