Everything spelt sexy as the girls took centre stage in Girls Wanna Rock at the Barnyard Theatre on Friday. From the leather catsuits and colourful tutus to the pink neon sign at the back of the stage.

The show began with a post-war scene featuring a sergeant major and three privates (Moolman, Worship and Jansen van Vuuren ) who just wanted to boogie to the sounds of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

It was interesting the way Didlick inhabited his different characters and made them believable and chauvinistic. Despite the fact that he is the only injection of testosterone in the show, his characters made up for it and his jokes were funny. According to him, or should I say Frankie, a marriage certificate is another word for a work permit and a man is just like a carpet; if you lay him properly you will walk all over him.

The show took several directions from the fifties era with These Boots Are Made For Walkin’, Stupid Cupid and Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend .

As outfits changed and the dresses got shorter and Madonna(Moolman) stepped on stage dressed in a flimsy white ra-ra dress, the guy seated next to me had his cellphone at the ready. As soon as Moolman started belting out Like A Virgin his fingers pressed record and this did not go down well with the missus. She whispered something into his ear and faster than the speed of light the phone was back in his pocket. However, this did not stop the maverick from trying again during the Lady Gaga Bad Romance and Poker Face performances.

This was my favourite part of the night as Trivacho, Britz and Moolman impersonated different versions of Gaga, except for the MTV Awards meat dress; the stench would have been too much. Everything was realistic, from Gaga’s outlandish dress sense and huge shades to the choreography, and the voices gelled in their diversity.

The other interesting performance was a drunk Amy Winehouse (Britz) who came stumbling down the stairs in a British flag mini dress singing Rehab. The summer swimsuit theme in Katy Perry’s California Girls and Party Time was a nice touch.

All the girls teamed up to wow us with Brenda Fassie’s Vulindlela, which got most people on their feet, and Waka Waka brought the show to a hair- raising climax and thundering applause.

l Girls Wanna Rock runs at the Barnyard until July 10. Tickets: R90 to R125 at 031 566 3045 or e-mail [email protected]
