Not so dull village as festival rocks

While Durban rocks out to the Vodacom Durban July and the Mr Price Pro Ballito, the quiet holiday town of Dullstroom hosts its second big event. Called the Dullstroom Winter Festival, it takes place from today until Sunday.

Following last year’s launch, the Mpumalanga town will again celebrate a festive mid-winter weekend of fly fishing, trail running, whisky tastings and micro- brewed beer, as well as a couple of music shows presented by Hilltop Live. The music events will be headlined by two of SA’s best blues guitarists, Albert Frost and Dan Patlansky. They will be playing at Dullstroom’s popular Cherry Grove central piazza.

From the age of 14, Frost has been carving a legendary name for himself on the blues and commercial rock circuit. Take Patlansky and his intense gravel voice and mix it with his extraordinary blues flair and we have a superstar right there. Look out for his latest album, 20 Stones.

Staying with the blues theme, Southern Gypsey Queen will be adding their blend of old rocking blues with some cool nu-skool punk .

Almost every person who sees The Black Cat Bones live becomes an instant fan, such are their crazy stage antics and their fire-hot material.

Also on the bill is a young singer, Kate Borthwick. She began playing the piano at the age of seven and is a cum laude graduate in music from the University of Pretoria.

After playing in a variety of productions including Frank Opperman’s Let’s Be Frank and Joseph Clark’s The Queen Experience, she has just released her debut album. Her music style can best be described as alternative acoustic pop with a jazzy flavour.

• Tickets for the shows are R100 on both nights and are available on www.ticketbreak.co.za. Visit www.dullstroomwinterfestival.co.za for accommodation options and more information or go to the Dullstroom Winter Festival Facebook page.
