POPULAR Metro FM DJ and motivational speaker DJ Sbu has apologised to his fans after his arrest for speeding at the weekend.

DJ Sbu, real name Sibusiso Leope, appeared briefly in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested on Friday night while driving at 170km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 north near Brooklyn.

The Sound Revival presenter said he was driving to Polokwane to attend the station’s birthday celebration activation when he was arrested.

Station spokeswoman Happy Ngidi said: “Metro FM regrets this unfortunate incident. As a station we do not condone speeding as things could have gone horribly wrong with worse repercussions.

“The station is in full support of the legal process and will let that take its course.”

She said Leope was remorseful and regretted the incident. “He takes the incident very seriously and apologises to his fans, followers and to South Africans at large,” Ngidi said.

This is not the first time that Leope has been arrested for speeding.

In 2007 he was forced to return a sponsored Audi TT roadster after being caught driving 275km/h between Grasmere tollgate and the Golden Highway, south of Joburg. He pleaded guilty, was fined R7 000 and received a suspended jail term. Leope will appear again in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court on October 3. – Tebogo Monama
