It was AKA’s birthday on the day of the Met. We started early with a few shots at the bar at the Cape Sun, where J&B’s favourite Jozi celebs are housed for the duration of the J&B Met weekend.
It’s such a party because it’s the first event where socialites and their ilk are reunited for the first time since the festive season. The list this year included the YFM Twins in red vinyl and Uyanda Mbuli in a dress inspired by Christmas wrappings. She (oddly enough) went on to win best dressed couple with Somizi, who was in his now famous white feathered David Tlale creation. And what a creation it was. How many birdies were plucked for that fantastic corset?
This year the J&B hospitality tent was far smaller than past years and it was whispered among the Tattersalls that it was the last time that the whisky brand would be sponsoring the event. According to rumours the gargantuan cellular company, Vodacom, will be taking over.
The only time I attended the Vodacom hospitality tent at the Vodacom July I found it boring. I was surrounded by the big gals belonging to the shower cap president who sat around munching through chicken while people like Bassie Khumalo spoke their poshest English in their finest outfits. Thank goodness I was rescued by Thomas and Unathi and their wicked sense of humour.
The J&B tent did offer excellent entertainment in the form of Cape Town DJ Honey B and Culoe de Song.
But on the day there was no one hotter than Roxy Louw. She was a mermaid who had just discovered legs. Both men and women stared in awe at the beautiful body that was made for that dress – and at the dress that was made for that beautiful body.

Selimathunzi’s Zizo Beda was dramatic yet chic in black. Her co-host Lunga Shabalala looked as if he was enjoying his first Met. Comedian Trevor Gumbi and his crew also seemed to be having fun.
Thalia and David Kau were the happiest couple at the Met and the Carducci men were out in full force, including Stoan and Theo Kgosinkwe.
Sunday evening’s event was particularly memorable as it was held at The Bungalows right on the beach in between Camps Bay and Clifton.
Actors from Generations, SABC corporate types, Thembi Seete and Chomee were just some of the guests who watched the sun set well after 9pm while eating sushi and drinking champagne. Sunny Boy entertained the crowd with great guitaring and then Black Coffee took over. - Saturday Star
