Sunday at Up the Creek on the Breede River in Swellendam was the best day ever. It began at 11am when I arrived to watch the melodic Holiday Murray and bumped into Shadowclub’s lead singer, Jacques Moolman.
The previous night, Shadowclub, a straight-up, no-frills rock ’n’ roll band, had put on yet another hot show on the main stage. They are definitely my favourite rock band at the moment.
The annual festival began on Thursday night and featured Piet Botha, Luna Paige, Akkedis, December Streets and Dan Patlansky.
However, the bulk of the sold-out crowd arrived on Friday afternoon for what turned out to be an idyllyic weekend of sun, river and great music.
One-man looper Jeremy Loops kicked off proceedings, followed by the Blues Broers, featuring one of our greatest and most effortless blues guitarists, Albert Frost.
Machineri, lead by Sannie Fox, were intense and then it was the turn of aKing. Southern Gypsy Queens again had the faithful howling for more. Unfortunately, I missed Great Apes, who are predicted to be the next big thing.
Saturday got off to a punk rocking start with solid outfit Durban’s City Bowl Mizers.
No One’s Arc are a great new find on the scene, as is Hot Water. But it was Karen Zoid who got the party started on Saturday night. This veteran of the music industry showed the babies how it’s done.
Up the Creek comes highly recommended as one of the best and most established events on the SA music calendar.
Up the creek , best event of 2012 ! Well done!!
Umm, no ... you just wasted a page of the internet.
Sucky review. Sooo much more than what is said above, could have been said about this festival. The Black cat bones were MIND BLOWING! Entertaining the crowd from around 3:30 until sunrise. Personally I think they were the greatest act at the Creek.
Really? You arrived three hours before the festival ended, so instead of writing a review you just listed the bands that played with a few generic comments. I could have gotten this much info off the flyer before Up the Creek even happened. I hope you weren't paid for this.

Therese, I think that your summary of UTC 2012 sucks. You were either busy doing something else, while The Kongos and Black cat bone played, were you limited to a word count for this review?
