As part of a charity and conservation minded trip to Lesotho and South Africa, Prince Harry will visit Durban on Tuesday.

The prince’s website said the tour of South Africa would focus on a number of key themes, including understanding South Africa’s recent history, the issues and opportunities for young people in South Africa today, and the importance of wildlife conservation.

In Durban this week he plans to visit two programmes using sport to drive social development.

“He will visit the Sharks to learn about a range of programmes proactively identifying and nurturing rugby talent, and Surfers Not Street Children, an organisation which provides psychosocial support and purpose to street children.

“This engagement will conclude on the beach in Durban, where Prince Harry will have the opportunity to meet people,” the website said.

The surfing mentorship programme empowers former street children as they move from childhood into adulthood. It pairs them with surfers who have been on the streets themselves.

After that the prince travels to the Kruger National Park where he plans to draw further attention to anti-poaching efforts.

Harry spent time this year working with rangers on the front line of conservation in South Africa and is keen to highlight their skills and their professional training.

He plans to visit the Southern African Wildlife College to see rangers in training at all levels of professional development.

His tour comes to a close in Johannesburg.

“The prince has long admired President Nelson Mandela and his family has had the honour of meeting and hosting Mr Mandela on a number of occasions.

“In the week which sees the anniversary of the former president’s passing, Prince Harry is keen to learn how South Africa is using his legacy to inspire and empower the next generation of South Africans.” Harry has been in the southern Africa region since Thursday, beginning with a visit to Lesotho’s Sentebale, a charity he founded with Prince Seeiso in memory of their mothers.

The country’s King Letsie III opened the Mamohato Children’s Centre at Thaba Bosiu in Lesotho.

The children’s centre will be the flagship facility that supports all of Sentebale’s work with vulnerable children in Lesotho.

Harry also played in the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup, the charity’s annual flagship event, at Val de Vie in Cape Town on Saturday.
