Robbie Williams' wife is expecting a girl.

The 'Angels' singer is "very excited" about the impending arrival but admitted his spouse Ayda Field had asked him to keep quiet about the gender of their unborn baby.

He said: "It's a girl. I'm very, very excited about becoming a daddy. I can't wait. The missus is, like, 'Don't go telling,' and I said, 'I won't.'

"My life is amazing right now. It's fantastic, you know."

The 38-year-old singer is already planning to teach his daughter self-defence in order to keep her safe when she is older.

He said: "I'm going to teach her football and karate and boxing.

"That's the first thing she's going to learn to keep people like me and [best friend] Johnny [Wilkes] away."

This Sunday sees the return of Soccer Aid, a celebrity soccer match organised by the singer to raise money for Unicef, and Robbie admits he was surprised to discover prospective fatherhood has made him more passionate about the children's charity.

He said: "Becoming a dad myself has changed my perception of Unicef.

"I didn't realise it would, but it did. I have found it quite over-whelming.

"We watched a video this morning about what Unicef does and I felt myself tearing up, in a way I maybe wouldn't have done in the past.

"It's definitely pulling on the heart-strings even more now that I know I've got the responsibility of looking after a little life."
