How to wear denim this summer
Now that the show is on TV, the MTV VJ Search has finally completed its nationwide hunt for the next cool kid to add to the channel’s team of VJs.
We caught up with MTV Base’s creative director, Tim Horwood, who travelled with the scouts to the country’s major cities, to find out how things will look in this season of MTV VJ Search.
“I would say we have been extremely successful like we have never been in the past,” said Horwood.
“We had some of the biggest turnouts in some cities where numbers would reach as high as 3 500. We also got a lot of hype from social media and the general media which made people know about the search.”
Being a channel that always strives to set itself apart from the rest, Horwood said that in this year’s search, MTV Base was looking for a different kind of presenter.
“With Citroën being on board this time, we thought of making ‘anti-ordinary’ the theme,” he said.
“This is why we also have Joey Rasdien there to affirm our theme. We want a host who is cut from a different cloth and isn’t afraid to show that side.”
This perhaps is due to the fact that most contestants who enter shows such as this one often have preconceived ideas of what a presenter should sound like.
“I know Bonang is probably going to kill me, but the truth is most of the contestants we’ve had try are trying so hard, sound like- like,” said Horwood, mimicking Bonang’s style of speaking.
“Honestly, that style is not the standard presenter’s style. It just happens to work for her, so people should stop thinking it is a universal style.
Like she did, we are looking for someone who can find a style within themselves that defines them and bring it to the table.”
The winner of the show, unlike before, gets a Citroën DS3 Cabrio and a one-year contract with MTV which is worth R500 000.
“This is just the beginning, but we hope the winner makes something of themselves years from now,” said Horwood.
“Sizwe (Dlomo, pictured) is our success story who, from not making it in the Durban auditions, travelled to Joburg and auditioned again. After winning he has been more than a VJ because he has now bought into businesses and has made a name for himself outside of MTV. This is what we hope the 2013 winner will do in 10 years’ time.”
• MTV VJ Search airs on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) every Saturday at 5pm.
