A new dawn for Morning Live

Comment on this story

to Andile Masuku, Vuyo Mbuli and Leanne Manas

Any entertainment journalist will tell you that in the middle of all the stories and deadlines, there is also a lot of mail to attend to. Most of it consists of invitations to various events that happen every other day and night.

So the task then becomes that of sifting through it all and trying to find what would be the best place to go and cover the given story.

One such invite popped into my mailbox last week and it was for the relaunch of SABC2’s TV breakfast show Morning Live.

Curious about would happen to our beloved Leanne Manas and Vuyo Mbuli team, I made my way to the event but was diappointed to be informed that the entire thing was moved to another date. Yes, they only discovered this on the day, after we had all left our offices.

That doesn’t leave you with a lot of faith in whatever changes Morning Live will be going through in the next few weeks. Had we been warned via e-mail, days before, it would have been a different story; but to have the cancellation an- nounced on the actual day paints a negative picture about what to look forward to with the so-called new look.

Because we are not patient enough to wait for the new date of the launch, if there is any, we quizzed SABC2 on what to expect.

First, the usual panel suspects, Manas, Mbuli and Peter Ndoro, will all remain main anchors of the show. Ndoro joined the team late last year as part of the new look that the production is going for.

To add to the changes, Morning Live will soon be moving into its new high-tech studios to be situated in the SABC TV building.

It is about time, because while there was nothing specifically wrong with the other look, it was just a bit too familiar.

Let’s hope we have more presentable live Twitter and Facebook feeds, translucent backgrounds with animated gizmos and state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment.

Nothing has been said on the colour schemes or the look and feel of the new studio. All the regular news updates which include the weather reports, commuter news, sport and business news will still form part of the daily broadcast.

There will be added focus on external broadcasts from locations across the country.

These are always interesting as they take us from the familiarity of the studio to anywhere in the country, making the viewers feel some sense of ownership of the show.

Morning Live first aired on November 1, 1999. It was presented by the then-SAFM talk-show host Mbuli and media personality Tracy Going. After a three-year partner- ship, SABC’s business news anchor Manas teamed up with Mbuli when she replaced Going in 2002. It has been “sharp sharp” at the end of every broadcast since.

• Morning Live broadcasts live Mondays to Fridays from 6am to 8am on SABC2.
