Aren’t you tired of the numerous game shows and reality TV shows flooding our screens? If it isn’t some food show, then it is has-been cele-brities attempting to reinvent themselves. Whatever it is, it is always something that, in hindsight, you wish you had not wasted your time on. Still, you watch.

Well, if shows with competitors are your thing, then you will enjoy Big Five Challenge: Introduction Day, a show that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of life and leaves you in the wild with nothing but a camera and instinct.

Over five days, six competitors from all over the world are asked to explore the dangerous Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe.

The park is one of the country’s most prestigious locations with an impressive array of animals that you are unlikely to encounter else-where on the continent. The park is said to host more than 100 mammal species and over 400 bird species.

Of these, there are about 19 herbivore and eight large carnivore species. Rare animals like the brown hyena can be found in this area in considerable numbers.

All of the country’s most protected animals can be found in this park. It is indeed a jungle out there. People visit the place from all over the world for a glimpse at what the world would have been like had humans not tampered with it.

Because of the danger involved, the Big Five Challenge contestants are likely to be serious adrenalin junkies. A total of six competitors were selected to run around the park in search of the “big five” – the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the rhino and the buffalo. Their task is to take photographs of these lovely animals as proof that they actually spotted them.

Everyone may get to see all the required animals, but only the best picture will win and, in this case, it will probably be the closest one. Every contestant will be given an armed guide, just in case, and a vehicle to roam around the jungle. However, the most essential thing they will need – a skilled tracker – is the one thing they will have to do without.

So based on luck and or perseverance, the contestants will have to find the animals themselves, before figuring out how to best capture the moment.

When taking the lion’s picture, I would personally make sure I have an amazing zoom lens on my camera. There is no way I will attempt a close-up shot – gun or no gun.

The leopard is so elusive that seeing it is a prize all on its own. If they are not hiding in caves, then they are up in trees blending in with their environment.

The rhino always looks angry. If it so much as suspects that the contestants are out there to harm its offspring, then your main worry isn’t the snaps, but how snappily you can get out of harm’s way.

Buffaloes are usually calm, but only up to a point, so one has to always keep a safe distance as they can chase predators for the longest time. Elephants are said to have a good memory so if you cross one and manage to escape, just hope that you never see it again.

• Big Five Challenge: Introduction Day premieres this Sunday on Animal Planet (Channel 260) at 6.20pm.
