We have had Prison Break and Heroes as successful TV series in the past. But that was then and all people talk about now is Scandal (known as The Fixer here) and The Good Wife.

A show that is highly underrated and which will definitely have a lot of us talking is Bones. Think Law & Order fused with a bit of CSI. As its title suggests, you’ll see a lot of bones lying around in each episode.

Starting in 2005, there have been many twists and turns in the storyline for the show to have reached its ninth season in the US.

We caught up with one of the stars, TJ Thyne (he plays Dr Jack Hodgins) who’s been with the show since its inception and asked him what to expect when the sixth season hits our screens.

Having made it to the ninth season meant the producers had to find some creative ways to stay relevant to the times. One way they did that was to incorporate actors or storylines involving other current hit TV shows such as Jersey Shore and So You Think You Can Dance.

“I wasn’t actually on set when they were doing those scenes with the supporting cast or the guest cast so I don’t know how that turned out. I do know it’s definitely that world of Jersey Shore,” said Thyne.

For him it was fascinating that the main character in Bones, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) played her role in a way befitting the subject at hand.

“It was actually funny because Brennan really looks at them as a species. She believes that she’s studying them from afar and observing. She anthropologically dissects what it is to be part of that community, which is very funny,” he explained.

He was also happy about how the writers also worked So You Think You Can Dance into some episodes.

“I just heard recently that Twitch (runner-up Stephen “tWitch” Boss) is going to come on, which I’m really excited about. I’ve never missed an episode of that show, but I can’t dance. Not only can I not dance, but I dance knowing that I can’t. So when I just heard that someone from So You Think You Can Dance was coming on, and I heard that it was Twitch, I thought it was great,” he said.

Thyne let us in on what to expect from most of the characters.

“There’s a lot that’s happened. People come back with a lot of different things. Sweets has gone off and completely taken on a new thing altogether. He’s off being a musician. He looks different because now he’s got facial hair. He’s not our clean-cut, suit-wearing, tie-carrying Sweets. It’s this new kind of him where he’s almost acting his age and even playing music in random spots,” he said.

He also gave away what to expect when it comes to relationships within the main group, with a special focus on Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan.

“Booth, of course, comes back with some news that he’s madly in love. Her name’s Hannah and she’s really cool. She’s sexy, she’s smart, she’s vivacious and she can kick some serious butt. She’s got it all,” he said.

Thyne also gave a bit of information on Brennan, who is close to Booth and has been hinted at as being his love interest from the first episode.

“And now, Brennan’s seeing him very happy with someone who is very similar and has all the great attributes she has. So I think that’s much more an interesting dynamic than if Booth had fallen for someone who was just very pretty – which is what Hannah is – but if she only had one of the 15 qualities that she has, then maybe we as an audience would go: ‘Oh we don’t like her as much’.

“Of course we won’t like her as much because she’s not Brennan, but it’s going to be a much bigger challenge for Brennan to deal with the fact that Booth is madly in love with this woman who is pretty great. That’s fun to see,” said Thyne.

He also gave up a bit about what his geeky character is going to be up to this season.

“Angela (Michaela Conlin) and I come back from Paris, which is very hard to do. We come back and we have been very active while we were in Paris.

“We come back with news that we’re going to have a baby, so I think Jack is beyond ecstatic about the fact that he’s going to be a dad and even though Angela doesn’t let him talk about it to anyone yet, he’s thrilled. And I think that’s going to be a lot of fun for me and Michaela,” said Thyne.

• Bones airs every Monday on Fox (DStv channel 125) at 8.20pm.
