Stand out with these 3 summer looks!
IF YOU look past the ridiculous title, Fashion Star is a really splendid show. We have got to the point when TV competition shows have been done to death, so it is refreshing to see something different.
The name of the show is a dead giveaway, but you don’t have to like fashion or be artistic to like this one. If you have ever gone into a clothing shop and struggled to decide what you to need buy, this show is for you.
Fashion Star pays homage to the people behind the scenes. We meet a couple of unknown designers who compete to sell their designs. To make it interesting the designers are given minimal resources, including time and materials.
They are given the opportunity to consult mentors, who include Jessica Simpson (pictured right), Nicole Richie and John Varvatos.
These celebrities are already in the glamour business so they can provide information that may be useful to the designers. But there is a catch – when it comes time to judge the designers’ finished products, the same mentors sit on the panel.
Top buyers from big companies also give their opinion on which designs they feel work well for their respective companies: Nicole Christie of H&M, Caprice Willard from Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue’s Terron Schaefer.
These three fashion gurus buy the designs they like. Designers who fail to sell any of their work are up for eviction.
The show is like Project Runway – with a twist. Whether you’re into fashion or not, you’re wearing something right now (hopefully) and you might want to know how it made into the store.
• Fashion Star airs from September 26 at 8.30pm on Vuzu (DStv channel 116).
