One last stroll down Wisteria Lane.
THE legacy of Desperate Housewives continues to live on in the trashy and OTT Real Housewives of… reality franchise. And Marc Cherry can be proud of the fact that, in delivering an award-winning hit show in which he made Marcia Cross (Bree Van de Kamp), Teri Hatcher (Susan Delfino), Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) and Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) into the next big deal after The Sex and the City, he inspired the reality trend.
After such a lengthy run, I guess fans weren’t as startled when ABC announced that season eight would be the final instalment.
It was growing rather pedestrian after most of the plots were milked to tedium.
Cherry certainly explored the full gamut of trouble stemming from affairs, murders, conspiracies, lies and blackmail in the deceptively idyllic suburb of Wisteria Lane.
And in the build-up to the last chapter in the lives of the friends, who have certainly enjoyed their fair share meltdowns, the ante is taken up a few notches, especially with Vanessa Williams livening things up with her bitchy character, Renèe Perry.
This time around, the stakes are raised as the cover-up of the murder of Gabrielle’s stepfather starts to unravel when Bree, like Mary Alice, receives an anonymous note: “I know what you did”.
Aside from this major story arc, there are pressing family issues the lead characters have to address like Renèe trying to figure out where she stands with Ben, Lynette and Tom dealing with the emotional pitfalls of their separation, Susan’s blunder when she expresses her guilt in a painting that is showcased at an opening and Gabrielle trying to simply keep it together for the sake of all of them.
Desperate Housewives may finally have come to the end of the road, but the final journey is dramatic, funny and entertaining nonetheless.
A farewell that certainly lingers!
