Dexter Season 8

This is how we end it? Really?

FILM: While this tv series ran it won Emmys and Golden Globes and was even rated the Best Written Series by the Writers’ Guild of America.

What happened, then, in this last season?

Season eight gives us Deborah Morgan (Jennifer Hall) working through the guilt of killing Maria La Guerta, while Dexter Morgan (Michael C Hall) decides to run off with Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovsky).

Yep, seems like the writers didn’t quite know what to do, so they dug up Hannah McKay again.

The entire series evolved to revolve around the relationship between Dexter and his sister, which really becomes explosive and sticky in this last season, but then everything just completely falls apart in the last episode.

And that last scene? No. Even actor Michael C Hall has questioned just exactly what the screenwriters were smoking when they came up with that.

The entire series was engrossing because we were watching a character evolve and learn what it takes to be human.

The opening sequence of the first episode was perfectly paced and scripted, with the most deliciously eerie score to set the scene.

If season eight was supposed to be about the legacy Dexter wanted to leave behind, the legacy is not exactly as amazing as that first scene suggested it was going to be.

Season eight does make me want to go and watch that first season again, though.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Disc one has a two-minute interview about episode 802, touching on Hall’s experience playing the role and directing the particular episode.

Disc four contains two featurettes. From Cop to Killer delves into the evolution of Morgan, featuring interviews with actors about the character and also scenes from the various season.

The same goes for The Evolution of Dexter Morgan, which explains the evolution of Dexter over the eight seasons.

The collection in its entirety on Blu-Ray contains all manner of extras like extra episodes, and other regions contain additional extras on their discs for season eight, but that is all we get in South Africa. – Theresa Smith
