Ex in the city means party time

The first episode of the reality show Downtown Girls is titled Recycling Your Ex and since this is an all-women cast, you know it gets juicier. For some, ex-lovers belong in the past, while others believe in second chances. However, the term “recycling” is a bit harsh and hints at desperation.

But that’s how the Downtown Girls roll. Meet Shallon, Gurj, Nikki, Victoria and Klo, a bunch of bubbly New York City women who will do just about anything to find the perfect partner.

Shallon is a blogger who usually blogs about relationships, sex and love. She finds her inspiration from the people around her. Oddly, for someone who dishes out advice, Shallon hasn’t quite got the game of love figured out yet. Her desire (and weakness) for younger men has left her with many heartaches.

Then there’s Gurj, a strong-willed rocker from London who is the epitome of Destiny’s Child’s Independent Women. She lives the cool life through her job at Atlantic Records. Apart from being a sobering influence on the gals, her job allows them access to male musicians whom they, and especially Shallon, are desperate to get at.

Nikki could easily be hottest of the crew, yet it’s hard for her to find love, or anyone who appreciates her. To keep busy, she runs a boutique which would have done well were it not for the US’s struggling economy. As shops around her’s close, she tries to focus on other things to stay sane. Her friends are there for her, but their company can only help so much. What she needs is a Prince Charming.

Victoria is Shallon’s roommate. She is studying law, but when she has the time she hangs out with the gals and, without knowing it, entertains them with her unintentional humour. She may be engrossed in her studies, but has toyed with the idea of dating. But this has proved so unsuccessful the rest of the posse call her “queen of the first date”.

Then there is Shallon’s best friend, Klo. The Sarah Jessica Parker look-alike is a bride-to-be and the friends are envious. She is Shallon’s blunt voice of reason and the others aspire to be like her.

So why watch a bunch of single ladies, you might ask? Well, these are fictitious characters, but real-life friends dealing with real-life issues. Many women will relate to this show, while men will gain some insight into the subjects dealt with. Also, the humour beats that found in some sitcoms.

In the first episode, for instance, Shallon throws a party and a few of the gals end up kissing one guy. That’s enough to get you curious.

l Downtown Girls season one airs on Wednesday at 8pm on Vuzu.
