Skop, skiet en donder. This is what the men and women of the Parisian police force in Braquo have come to sub- scribe to.
This French cop series, which started on FX last Sunday, chronicles what happens when good guys get fed up with the long arm of the law slapping its young in the face.
The dark drama kicked off with the commander of the Regional Directorate of the Judicial Police of Paris of Hauts-de-Seine committing suicide after he is falsely accused of misconduct.
His four favourite officers are cut up about the loss of their father figure and begin to question the way things happen in their police department. Refusing to let their commander’s reputation die with him, they decide they must find a way to clear his name.
To do so, the officers must resort to unorthodox methods, not always entirely legal nor guaranteeing their personal safety.
Jean Hugues-Anglade (Eddie Caplan), Nicolas Duvauchelle (Theo Wachevski), Joseph Malerba (Walter Morlighem) and Karole Rocher (Roxanne Delgado) do a good job as the stars of the series.
Created by actor/director Olivier Marchal (whose subject matter often involves cops and the law), Braquo relies heavily on the unsaid. The perception and what’s implied.
Two seasons of the drama have already been filmed and shown around the world but word has it the third season is the final in what has been a relatively successful show.
Braquo is no Law & Order but it has its moments. The four friends are like the cool kids at the rogue table and they aren’t afraid to cross the yellow line when compelled to.
If you hate to read and can’t speak the language of love then you may want to give this series a miss. It’s in French with English subtitles. A French slang word for “circle”, the show’s title suggests there may be an opportunity for things to come full circle. But we’ll have to watch the whole season to see.
• Braquo is on FX (Top TV Channel 110) Sundays at 10.45pm.
