Kids are firmly in the driving seat at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards (KCAs) – the award show where millions of kids decide who’s hot and who’s not in film, music, sports and television.
It’s testament to the talent of the KCA winners – or the intuition of the kid voters – from the first KCAs in 1988 that most of them are still going strong nearly 30 years later.
That inaugural event featured wins for Eddie Murphy (Favourite Movie Actor), Whoopi Goldberg (Favourite Movie Actress), Beverly Hills Cop II (Favourite Movie) and Madonna (Favourite Female Vocalist).
KCA winners take home a trophy in the form of a bright orange “blimp” figurine, inspired by the logo used by Nickelodeon until about 2009. We wondered who, over the years, has landed most trophies at the KCAs.
Here are just some of the records stars have set at the KCAs over the past three decades:
Top of the list is the undersea cartoon hero SpongeBob SquarePants, who has taken home 11 awards over the past 10 years.
Tied with SpongeBob for most awards won is former KCA host Will Smith, winning accolades for acting and singing.
Harry Potter has an impressive eight awards under his invisible cloak. The wizarding franchise won seven of its awards for Best Book and just one for Favourite Movie, for Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire (2006).
Actor Adam Sandler won Favourite Movie Actor six times between 1999 and last year, and notched up victories for Favourite Voice from an Animated Movie (2003) and the Wannabe Award (2004).
Representing the girls, Miley Cyrus has dominated the KCA event since 2007 in a number of key categories, demonstrating her versatility by winning six blimps in three distinct areas: Favourite TV Actress, Favourite Female Singer and Favourite Movie Actress.
