There are some creative names that celebrities have given to their legions of supporters. For instance, Justin Bieber has Beliebers. Tamar Braxton has her Tamartians and Beyoncé has The Beyhive.
However, there is one entertainer who has the most genius title for those who love her: Anne Hirsch.
The comedienne has named her “millions, if not billions” of supporters Fannes. From Wednesday and each one there- after, those Fannes can enjoy an hour of The Anne Hirsch Radio Show (TAHS) on East Coast Radio and Jacaranda FM.
For many months, Hirsch has had people glued to their computer screens as she delivered two seasons of TAHS. Billed as South Africa’s first (s)talk show, TAHS sees Hirsch interview celebrities in an unconventional way. For example, when she sits down with comedian Tumi Morake, they create an infomercial for a product that will instantly make women funny. Because, you know, women just aren’t as funny as men.
This tongue-in-cheek approach to her web-series is what caught the eye of Kagiso Broadcasting, who approached Hirsch to create an extension of her YouTube show for the radio airwaves.
Following a stint on 2oceansvibe internet radio, Hirsch is excited about bringing her brand of humour to commercial radio.
“Kagiso Broadcasting approached me and I have the opportunity to work with Travis Bussiahn who is a world-class producer,” says Hirsch.
“The radio show will be an extension of what is online, but we’re looking at adding even crazier, more amazing elements. It’s not a normal radio show at all. It’s nothing South Africa has ever heard before and even Kate Moss is excited about it.”
Ah, yes. If you’re unfamiliar with the persona Hirsch presents to the public, you may be thrown by her celeb name-dropping and claims that Angelina Jolie is her best friend. Fannes have even gone as far as saying Jolie and Hirsch actually look alike. It’s sweet and funny, but does it come between Hirsch, the smart, hilarious comedienne, actually just being herself?
“I’d hope people have the wherewithal to know that’s just a character I play,” she explains.
“In the beginning, I had to make a choice about whether I was going to use my real name for this character, but the truth is, this is my kind of comedy and if it wasn’t a character, I’d be exhausted and have no friends and a lot of restraining orders.
“But,” Hirsch’s voice gets lighter, “Angelina supports everything I do. I’m a huge influence in her work, too, so it’s fine.”
While Jolie won’t be making an appearance on Hirsch’s radio show (yet), the funnywoman has created videos inviting specific celebrities to be guests on her show. So far, confirmed guests include Kenny Kunene, Jimmy Nevis, Casper de Vries and Kanyi Mbau. But this is not where Hirsch plans to stop.
The third season of TAHS will start on YouTube next month and “I will also be bringing out an exercise video and making music videos, you know,” she assures.
We’ll be watching.
