In another dimension with Kat Graham

Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) just can’t seem to catch a break on Vampire Diaries. After previously “dying”, she is now trapped in another dimension with her not-so-favourite person – Damon Salvatore. Debashine Thangevelo looks at what mayhem awaits our favourite self-sacrificing witch-cum-anchor-to-the-other-side this season…

AT the epicentre of all the supernatural troubles plaguing Mystic Falls – whether it be dealing with The Originals, warlocks, werewolves, doppelgangers, vampire hunters or the Travellers – the influence Bonnie Bennett wielded as a witch always saw her trapped in Catch-22 situations.

To date, she has saved her BFF Elena Gilbert a gazillion times. She saved Jeremy (Elena’s brother), with whom she fell in love. To save Tyler, Caroline, Damon and Stefan, she placed Klaus’ soul in Tyler in the season three finalé.

Despite the many warnings about angering the spirits, she continued to help her friends. That selflessness cost her dearly, though.

Somehow, after “dying” she made her way back to the land of the living in season five. But it was short-lived.

Season six kicked off with the emotional aftermath of the collapse of the Other Side. Months later, everyone is still struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives – some forced to reside on the outskirts of town thanks to The Travellers turning it into a magic-free spot.

On Bonnie being stuck with Damon, Graham says, “I think that’s the point. It would be a boring show if all the characters got along and they ran off happily together. These two people would be the other’s last choice if they had to be stuck on a deserted island with someone. It’s the worst situation possible.”

In a way, this getting-to-know-each-other period might be beneficial; if not to them, certainly for viewers in need of comic relief.

Kat agrees: “You will definitely get to see different aspects of the characters this season because they have to work together to find a way out. That will be really interesting to watch. Can you imagine? But it’s not going to evolve overnight. It’s so funny because Ian Somerhalder and I are super-close in real life and it’s all ‘I hate you!’ at work at the moment.”

As for the greatest challenge for Bonnie this season, she shares, “I guess we will see. Whatever this new existence will be, it may have new rules or it may be that the old rules still apply.”

Now that she is borderline human, the shift in power has a domino effect on her storyline.

Expanding on how she interprets her character, Graham notes, “If they decided that the character had an end and that was how the story was going to evolve, it’s not your job to be attached, right? It’s your job to do a great performance each and every episode – just like it is your last. And I’m hoping that I’ve been playing it that way; that I treat every episode like it is my last. It’s your job to tell the story and be there as a partner for these incredible writers that had this idea that came to life…”

Five years on, how does it feel to be a part of Vampire Diaries?

“You know what my favourite part of the day is? I love meeting the fans. I’m honestly the biggest TV fan. I watch so much TV. I’ll sit on my couch for hours. I love all that stuff. I feel like I’m looking at myself. I feel like if I hadn’t booked The Vampire Diaries, I’d probably be at Comic Con or a Game of Thrones convention because I get into it like that. That they’re still so excited feels great.”
