If you ask Loyiso Gola about some of the key elements that made Emmy Award nominee Late Night News a success, he would tell you Julius Malema was one.
Aside from the great teamwork, inspired creativity, and perseverance over the years, he says they are thankful to Malema for all the material he provides for the show.
“We get lots of material courtesy of Juju… he has been great for us.”
This week Gola and his team at the satirical news show, which airs on eNCA, were celebrating the news of their nomination for this year’s awards.
Late Night News was nominated for an International Emmy alongside the local version of the format reality show MasterChef South Africa.
The awards from the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences shortlisted 36 nominees across nine categories.
Late Night News, with comedian Gola from Diprente Productions, scored a nomination as one of the four best programmes in the comedy category.
Gola, the lead anchor on the show, said he had felt incredibly proud after finding out that the show had been nominated.
“It’s an incredibly great honour, and very humbling. Credits to the whole LNN (Late Night News) team for all the hard work over the years,” he said.
The team had been shocked when they learnt the show had been nominated.
“We suspected that we could be in the running but when it finally happened it was a real big shock for the whole team.”
Winning the Emmy would be a dream come true for Gola and his team. The eNCA weekly show has made name brands out of puppet Chester Missing and the fictional roving international reporter David Kibuuka.
”We are up against three other shows, so at the very worst we have a 25 percent chance of winning.”
Gola said he was excited to attend the International Emmy Awards, which take place on November 25 in New York.
MasterChef South Africa, from Quizzical Pictures and Lucky Bean Media, also gained a nomination as one of four shortlisted programmes in the category for non-scripted entertainment. The cooking reality TV show, which airs on M-Net, won a nomination for season one of its show. - The Saturday Star
