When watching this show you are reminded that contestant Reeva Steenkamp is no longer with us. As we grow with the show, you realise how friendly she was and how untimely her death was.
Tropika Island of Treasure let’s us go back to a time when she had little to worry about. Unlike the ousted Genevieve Amy Arulappan and Mario Ogle (pictured), Steenkamp is safe on the show. Perhaps Arulappan was right when she assessed herself getting booted out as a result of being anti-social.
But then why was Ogle booted? He looks like a good guy and smiles a lot, but still the chop came. Perhaps he was too busy doing sit-ups and forgot to be part of the group.
WORDS FROM THE EVICTED
“I was dumfounded, but also understood why it ended so soon for me,” Ogle said.
“It was the second time that a pleb had won a chance to vote out someone so I knew they’d vote the strongest contestant out. I am not only talking strong as in physical, but also mental.
“Unfortunately it had to be me and I had to face the music,” he laid out his theory.
Although admitting that the show is not always about physical strength, Ogle insisted that his impressive physical stature made him a target.
“I cannot say it is my attitude because I get along with everyone.
“All the same, it was an awesome experience,” he concluded.
KODAK MOMENT
I love Usain Bolt, but those Jamaican unitards are just not on. You wouldn’t find me dead in one of them. They just show too much, as was seen on the last episode. Although the ladies looked pretty hot in the bright yellow-and-green tights, the guys were uncomfortable. It was a far way from the usual baggy jeans swag they are used to.
CRYSTAL BALL
Sinethemba has the crown again and come Saturday he gets to chop another player. After Ogle’s departure, if his theory about physically and mentally stronger players being a threat is true, then this week Da Les, Duan and AKA could face the axe. Da Les is the type of guy who wants you to think he is harmless, meanwhile he is scheming to stay.
Duan also has that effect and perhaps he will be saved by the fact that he, like Sinethemba, is a pleb and they are allies. AKA called out Sinethemba the last time he was in the eviction seat. After sighing in relief, he said, “You are nothing!” to Sinethemba and walked away.
If the crowned contestant chooses to remember that incident, the rapper is toast.
The ladies are safe for now.
OUR WISH LIST
It would be nice to see a woman win for a change because they give interesting reasons for evicting their foes. Though there hasn’t been much on-screen drama, we know things are brewing behind the scenes. With the ladies it has been clear that the celeb/pleb line is as wide as the Great Wall of China.
Tropika Island of Treasure airs every Saturday on SABC1 at 6.30pm.
