A pastor is moving to Horizon Deep, and they’d better hope and pray it’s for the right reasons.

Acclaimed actor Aubrey Poo has joined the Isidingo cast to take on the role of Pastor Gabriel.

He will make his on-screen debut on Tuesday in the midst of the Calvin kidnapping drama.

Aubrey is a well-known actor, singer and dancer best known for his role as Pelo Mohale in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango, and the priest, Pastor Lefa Letswalo, in e.tv’s Scandal, a role he played for two-and-a-half years.

Aubrey, 34, says going back to church and joining Isidingo was a no-brainer: “Over the years I’ve worked with many of these actors, so it’s been like a reunion of sorts.”

The welcoming reception for Pastor Gabriel might be short-lived as the residents of Horizon Deep get to know him better.

Fun

Described by writers as a “21st Century clergyman”, Pastor Gabriel is a divorced dad who leaves bustling Soweto for the Deep.

Aubrey says he’s having a fun time sinking his teeth into this meaty role.

“It’s great to tackle such a conflicted role. The man has different sides to him and I think that will become clear very soon.”

He just laughs when asked to describe what lies ahead for the Pastor because Aubrey knows there is going to be high drama.

“He’s a fallible man. A lot of people are taken in by him when he first arrives but you’ll be able to tell he’s not your normal man of the cloth,” he reveals.

The actor also had no hesitation about taking on the role of a holy man again, as it’s a chance to show mense a different side to the men of God.

“I’m sure there are people out there who will identify very closely with Gabriel and his actions,” he says.

Pastor Gabriel has a bit of sugar and spice, and fans shouldn’t be too surprised to see the manipulative preacher show his greedy and selfish side.

Aubrey says he’s looking forward to getting fan feedback.

“They are such a passionate group of people, and used to great acting and storylines so I’m gonna wait and see what the Isidingo fans have to say,” says Aubrey.
